Biography
Peter Nguyễn Văn Lựu was born near Gò Vấp and spent part of his childhood in Bình Định. His uncle, who was also his baptismal godfather and a priest, helped educate him. Later he lived with missionaries including Bishop Cuenot. His superiors sent him to Penang for study, where a fellow student remembered his attention to prayer, observance of seminary rules, and practical help for others.
Peter became a priest and ultimately suffered imprisonment during the persecution. In 1861 officials pronounced his death sentence and brought him from prison to execution. Catholics from nearby communities recovered his body and carefully marked its burial place. He was canonized in 1988.
