Biography
Perpetua Hong Kum-ju grew up with her grandmother and married while young. After losing her husband and later her son, she lived in Minari-kol. A Catholic householder helped her renew her understanding of the catechism, and she became known for prayer and practical service to others.
During imprisonment she refused to renounce her faith or reveal Catholics' hiding places. Although she became seriously ill, she recovered enough to care for fellow prisoners, who regarded her with affection. Perpetua was executed in Seoul in September 1839. The Korean bishops preserve her story among the 103 canonized martyrs.
