Biography

Oswald was a monk and bishop connected with the renewal of English monastic life. He first served as a canon at Winchester, then entered the Benedictine monastery at Fleury in France. Returning to England, he became bishop of Worcester and later also took responsibility for the Church of York.

He helped establish the Rule of Saint Benedict in a number of monasteries. The Martyrology remembers him as a learned and approachable teacher as well as a bishop. He died in 992. His commemoration is February 28 in ordinary years and moves to February 29 in leap years. He is a different person from Oswald, the seventh-century king of Northumbria.
