Biography

Nuno Álvares Pereira grew up in Portugal and entered royal service as a young man. He married Leonor de Alvim and later became commander of the Portuguese army under João I. His military responsibilities during the succession struggle included the victory at Aljubarrota in 1385, while prayer and devotion remained part of his daily life.

After his wife’s death and the restoration of peace, he distributed much of his property to veterans. In 1423 he entered the Carmelite house he had founded in Lisbon, taking the name Nuno of Saint Mary. He chose the humble position of a donated brother and lived without the privileges attached to his former rank. Benedict XVI canonized Nuno Álvares Pereira in 2009.
