St. Maria of Gatchina

A bedridden nun and martyr who was a source of spiritual strength for thousands during the Soviet era.

Biography

Maria suffered from Parkinson's disease which left her completely paralyzed and in constant pain. Despite this, she was transformed into a spiritual elder who could read souls. People lined up outside her house in Gatchina to receive her counsel. She was finally arrested and died in a prison hospital.
