Biography

Katharina Kasper grew up in a large farming family at Dernbach, with limited opportunities for schooling. She worked in the fields and broke stones for road construction while sustaining an interest in religious reading. Even with few resources, she helped neighbors who had less and brought children to a nearby Marian shrine.

In 1848, with local support and the bishop’s consent, she opened a house for poor people. Women joined her and became the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ; she took the religious name Maria. Their houses combined nursing, care for children and assistance to older people, extending the practical charity that had shaped her youth. Francis canonized Maria Katharina Kasper in 2018.
