Biography
Macrina the Younger was the sister of Basil the Great, Gregory of Nyssa and Peter of Sebaste. After the death of her intended husband, she remained with her mother and helped transform the family household into a community marked by prayer, hospitality and care for others. Her influence on the religious vocations of her brothers forms part of the Catholic account.
Gregory of Nyssa witnessed her final illness and wrote about her life and their discussion of the soul and resurrection. Scripture had shaped both her education and her religious commitments. She died in 379 at the community associated with the family estate. She is distinct from Macrina the Elder, her grandmother, whose influence belonged to an earlier generation.
