Biography

Lutgardis came from Tongeren and was educated among the Benedictine women of Saint-Trond. Her religious life later took her to the Cistercian monastery of Aywiers. Rather than accepting leadership at her earlier monastery, she chose the new community, where prayer and contemplation shaped the rest of her life.

Catholic accounts associate her especially with devotion to the heart of Christ and prayer for sinners. They also describe loss of sight during her later years, when silence and contemplation became increasingly important to her daily life. She died at Aywiers in 1246, remembered in the Cistercian tradition for the depth of her religious commitment.
