Biography
Joseph Marello served as a priest in the Diocese of Asti through administrative work, spiritual guidance, catechesis, and care for elderly people. He considered a contemplative vocation, but counsel from his bishop helped direct him toward a community serving the local Church. In 1878 he founded the Oblates of Saint Joseph.
The congregation brought together priests and brothers committed to education and ministry inspired by Saint Joseph. Marello became bishop of Acqui in 1889, encouraging parish missions, the formation of young people, and cooperation between clergy and parishioners. His life gives substance to the idea of quiet service through specific responsibilities. He died in 1895 and was canonized in 2001.
