Biography

John Gualbert came from Florence and entered monastic life after a change of heart that Catholic tradition associates with forgiving his brother's killer. His search for a more disciplined religious community led him beyond his first monastery. At Vallombrosa he helped establish a new monastic family dedicated to prayer and reform.

At Vallombrosa he led a community committed to a more austere observance, making reform a continuing communal practice. He died at Passignano in 1073. The remembered act of forgiveness remained central to Catholic accounts of his conversion, while his later work gave that change of life a lasting expression in a new monastic foundation.
