Biography

Hugh of Cluny came from the family of the counts of Semur and entered the monastery while still young. He became its sixth abbot and led it during a period of major expansion. His responsibilities extended beyond the abbey through councils, relationships with rulers and efforts to support the wider movement of monastic reform.

His long leadership included the construction of the great third church at Cluny. He also attempted to mediate between Emperor Henry IV and Gregory VII, though the conflict continued. He died in 1109 after decades of service, remembered for almsgiving, prayer and attention to monastic discipline across the network of houses connected with Cluny.
