Biography

Henry II was a Bavarian ruler who became emperor and married Cunegund of Luxembourg. His reign involved both military and political struggles and sustained support for ecclesiastical institutions. The Catholic account connects him especially with the establishment of the bishopric of Bamberg and encouragement of monastic reform.

Religious support accompanied the responsibilities and conflicts of government. Henry's connections with the Benedictine and Cluniac tradition helped make monastic reform part of his public commitments. He died in 1024 and was buried at Bamberg. After his death Cunegund retired to religious life, continuing the family's association with the foundations they had supported together.
