Biography

Germanus of Paris came from the region of Autun and first lived as a monk. He became abbot of Saint-Symphorien before being called to the episcopal ministry in Paris. His contemporary friend Venantius Fortunatus wrote about his life, providing an important early witness to his memory.

As bishop he retained the habits of monastic life while caring for people beyond the monastery. Catholic accounts particularly remember his generosity to the poor and his efforts on behalf of prisoners and enslaved people. He supported the monastery of the Holy Cross, where he was buried; it became known as Saint-Germain-des-Prés. He died in 576 and is commemorated on May 28. He is distinct from Germanus of Capua.
