Biography
Genoveva Torres Morales experienced family loss in childhood and the amputation of a leg at thirteen. She used crutches throughout her life. Time in a charitable home gave her opportunities for prayer and practical work, while her own experience made the isolation of women without reliable support particularly concrete to her.
In 1911 she helped establish a community in Valencia to meet the needs of poor women who could not afford to live independently. This became the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy Angels. She continued founding and guiding communities despite physical limitations and a preference for solitude. Canonized in 2003, she should be remembered for this specific ministry as well as for endurance in suffering.
