Biography
Bonifacia Rodríguez Castro grew up in a family of craftspeople in Salamanca. After her father died, she supported the household through cord making and experienced long working hours and low wages. She eventually opened her own workshop, where younger women began meeting for friendship, prayer and support away from their difficult workplaces.
Meeting the Jesuit Francisco Butinyà helped redirect her desire for religious life toward a community rooted in work. She founded the Servants of Saint Joseph, drawing on the household of Nazareth as a model. Her vocation connected shared prayer and skilled labor with the dignity and Christian formation of working women. Benedict XVI canonized Bonifacia Rodríguez Castro in 2011.
