Biography

Begga belonged to the family of Pippin of Landen and was the sister of Gertrude of Nivelles. She married Ansegisel and became the mother of Pippin of Herstal. After her husband's death, she founded a religious community at Andenne, drawing on the monastic example already established within her family.

The community at Andenne followed a monastic tradition associated with Benedict and Columbanus. Begga died in 693, remembered as a widow who gave lasting form to her religious commitment through a foundation. The much later claim that she originated Flemish beguinages is not historically established; the resemblance between the names should not obscure the centuries separating the institutions.
