St. Maria Crocifissa di Rosa
Maria Crocifissa di Rosa was born into a prosperous family in Brescia, Italy. Her care for poor and sick people became especially visible during the cholera epidemic of 1836. Companions joined her in this work, and their shared service developed into the religious community known as the Handmaids of Charity.
The congregation began in 1839 and later received papal approval. She committed her resources and her own life to the spiritual and physical needs of others, taking the religious name Crocifissa to express devotion to the suffering Christ. She died in 1855, was canonized by Pius XII in 1954, and is commemorated on December 15. Her foundation connected religious commitment with sustained, organized care.
December 15 is a Catholic commemoration recorded by Nominis. This daily reading does not determine the Mass or liturgical rank; local calendars and higher-ranking celebrations can differ.
