St. John Gabriel Perboyre
John Gabriel Perboyre first encountered seminary life while accompanying his younger brother. He entered the Congregation of the Mission in 1818 and, after ordination in 1826, helped form seminarians in France. His brother Louis hoped to serve in China but died during the journey. John Gabriel subsequently asked to take up that missionary work himself.
He arrived in China in 1835, learned the language, and visited small Christian communities before his arrest and martyrdom in 1840. His biography connects missionary commitment with the less visible work of teaching and preparation. The Vatican's canonization record places his recognition as a saint in 1996; he should not be confused with the earlier Vincentian martyr Francis Regis Clet.
