St. Dulce Lopes Pontes
Dulce Lopes Pontes was a Brazilian religious sister whose care for people in poverty grew into a major network of medical and charitable services. Born Maria Rita in Salvador in 1914, she became widely known as Sister Dulce.
A childhood encounter with a poor neighborhood helped direct her attention toward neighbors lacking food, shelter, and treatment. She entered the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception and took her mother's name, Dulce. Her service developed through immediate responses to needs she encountered.
She supported workers and established facilities for education and health care. When people she sheltered were evicted from improvised accommodation, a convent henhouse became another temporary refuge. This episode became closely associated with the eventual development of Santo Antônio Hospital.
Her charitable foundation, established in 1959, allowed the work to grow beyond one person's efforts. She continued despite serious respiratory illness and received national recognition, including nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. She died in 1992 and was canonized in 2019. Her legacy is visible in sustained institutions of care, not simply in memorable stories about their humble beginnings.
August 13 local liturgical commemoration; death anniversary March 13.
