Junípero Serra was a Franciscan priest and teacher from Mallorca who became a missionary in New Spain. After work in Mexico, he helped establish the California mission network, personally founding nine missions. Carmel became his headquarters and burial place. He sought protection for Indigenous people from abuses by colonial soldiers, while working within Spain's expansion into their lands.
Teaching preceded his missionary career, and the move from Mallorca to New Spain placed his learning within a different cultural and political setting. The missions joined religious instruction, settlement, and colonial government. His personal petitions against soldiers' abuses therefore existed within, rather than outside, a larger system of Spanish authority.
His legacy also includes the mission system's coercive control and punishment of Indigenous converts, matters that must accompany accounts of evangelization. His religious commitment does not erase those experiences. Pope Francis canonized him in Washington in 2015. A responsible biography holds together his missionary vocation, the colonial setting, and the consequences of that system for Native communities.
For Indigenous communities, the missions were not experienced only as places of preaching or architecture. Restrictions on freedom and imposed discipline are part of the same history. His canonization recognizes Catholic judgments about his holiness; it does not settle every historical dispute about the institutions in which he participated or cancel the testimony of affected communities.
This saint is included on this recurring date in the U.S. Roman Rite calendar published by the USCCB. This reading guide gives U.S. calendar saints priority; the Mass celebrated on a particular year’s date can differ because of Sundays, seasons or higher-ranking celebrations.
Explore the biography & sourcesWhen several saints share a date, this guide first favors saints on the USCCB’s U.S. calendar, then other documented Catholic commemorations. Dates can vary by place and tradition. This is a discovery guide, not the official liturgical calendar for your parish; the liturgical banner follows the celebration for the year. The date browser includes February 29 for leap years.
