St. Paul VI
Giovanni Battista Montini came from a family active in Catholic and civic life near Brescia. Health concerns meant he attended seminary as an external student, and he was ordained in 1920. Further study and a brief diplomatic posting in Poland led to work in the Vatican Secretariat of State and ministry among Catholic university students.
As pope, taking the name Paul VI, he guided the Second Vatican Council and supported the Church’s missionary work. His earlier student ministry emphasized informed faith, participation in the liturgy and practical charity. His life combined pastoral responsibility with diplomacy and Church administration across a period of major change in Catholic life. Francis canonized Paul VI in 2018.
