March 11From the feast-day calendar

01 · Read · A life to discover
Eulogius was a ninth-century priest and writer in Córdoba whose works preserve accounts of Christians executed during the religious conflicts of the 850s. Córdoba, rather than Toledo, was the principal setting of his life.
He came from an educated family and studied in the city's Christian intellectual environment. His friendship with the writer Alvarus connected religious study with wider literary interests. Travel and contacts with other Christian communities also informed his understanding of the Church.
He defended those he regarded as martyrs and recorded their imprisonment and deaths. His writings are indispensable evidence, but they express the position of an involved advocate. They should be read with awareness of disagreements within the Christian community and the wider setting of Muslim rule.
Eulogius was elected archbishop of Toledo but never took possession of the see. After sheltering Leocritia, a convert from Islam, he was arrested and executed in 859. His March 11 remembrance honors both martyr and writer. His legacy is unusually bound to the survival of texts: much of the community he defended is known through the narrative he chose to preserve.
Explore the biography & sourcesWhen several saints share a date, this guide first favors saints on the USCCB’s U.S. calendar, then other documented Catholic commemorations. Dates can vary by place and tradition. This is a discovery guide, not the official liturgical calendar for your parish; the liturgical banner follows the celebration for the year. The date browser includes February 29 for leap years.
