St. Benedict of Aniane
Benedict of Aniane was a monastic reformer in the Carolingian period. After service at the royal court, he entered monastic life at Saint-Seine in Burgundy and later established a monastery at Aniane in southern France. His concern was the practical renewal of communities whose life had been disrupted by war and differing customs.
He helped promote a common observance of the Rule of Saint Benedict across monasteries of the empire. A gathering of abbots at Aachen in 817 was an important part of this work. The Martyrology also remembers his contribution to monastic customs and the liturgy. He died in 821 and is commemorated on February 12, a different date and identity from Benedict of Nursia.
February 12 is a Catholic commemoration recorded by Nominis. This daily reading does not determine the Mass or liturgical rank; local calendars and higher-ranking celebrations can differ.
