St. Angela Merici
Angela Merici grew up near Lake Garda and developed a strong religious life from childhood. After family bereavements, she became a Franciscan tertiary and joined prayer with practical works of mercy. Her ministry later brought her to Brescia.
After the death of members of her family, Angela lived with an uncle at Salò before returning to her native area. Manual work, prayer, and assistance to others belonged together in her daily life. In 1516 she went to Brescia to help a widow, developing relationships that shaped her later foundation.
The distinctive feature of her company was that consecration did not initially require withdrawal into a cloister. Women could pursue a dedicated Christian life amid ordinary society. Later Ursuline institutions developed in different forms, so their subsequent educational history should not be projected unchanged onto every detail of Angela’s original company.
She founded the Company of Saint Ursula, opening a distinctive path for women to dedicate their lives to God while remaining active in the world. Her legacy developed through the Ursuline tradition and its service to women and girls. The Church commemorates her on January 27; she was canonized in 1807.
