St. Oscar Arnulfo Romero

Archbishop of San Salvador who was assassinated while saying Mass for his outspoken defense of the poor during El Salvador's civil war.

Biography

St. Oscar Romero was a quiet, conservative priest who was appointed Archbishop of San Salvador expecting he would not challenge the status quo. Instead, after witnessing the murder of his friend Fr. Rutilio Grande, he became the most vocal defender of the poor in Latin America. He was shot dead while celebrating Mass in 1980.
