St. Chaeremon of Nilopolis
Chaeremon was an elderly bishop of Nilopolis in Egypt during the persecution under the emperor Decius. Dionysius of Alexandria, whose account is preserved by Eusebius, says that Chaeremon fled with his wife into the Arabian mountains. They were never seen again, and subsequent searches did not even recover their bodies.
Dionysius reports absence and unsuccessful searching rather than a scene of heroic last words. That restraint is itself historically valuable. It preserves the uncertainty experienced by a community whose bishop and his wife had vanished during the upheaval.
The reference to his wife also belongs to the actual testimony and should not be silently removed to make his life resemble a later model of episcopal celibacy. His story witnesses to displacement and loss without permitting a confident reconstruction of what happened in the mountains.
This near-contemporary account establishes a bishop displaced by persecution but does not describe a trial or witnessed execution. His remembrance among the martyrs preserves the suffering of Christians who died or disappeared while seeking refuge, as well as those killed directly by officials. December 22 is the Roman martyrological commemoration. Further claims about his speeches, patronage, or precise manner of death are unsupported by this evidence.
