St. John Berchmans
Saint John Berchmans was a Jesuit student whose brief life was remembered for fidelity in study, prayer, and community responsibilities. He died at twenty-two before becoming a priest.
Born at Diest, he encountered financial obstacles to education. Arrangements to serve in clerical households enabled him to continue studying. His decision to become a Jesuit disappointed his father, who had hoped a diocesan priest could help the family, but his father ultimately gave permission.
Berchmans entered the Society of Jesus in 1616 and later studied at the Roman College. Fellow Jesuits noticed the care he gave ordinary duties. He also experienced family bereavement during these years, losing both parents while pursuing his vocation.
An intense period of academic work was followed by serious illness in 1621. His community cared for him as fever and weakness increased, and he died that August. His story should not be enlarged into an invented missionary career or priestly ministry. Its distinctive feature is a young man's wholehearted participation in formation, remembered by those who shared daily life with him.
Jesuit observance; August 13 is his death date and another devotional commemoration.
