St. Clement I
Clement I was one of the earliest bishops of Rome. His memory is closely associated with a letter sent from the Roman Church to the Christians of Corinth during a serious internal dispute. The letter calls the community back to concord and is an important witness to Christian life soon after the apostolic period.
The precise details of his pontificate and later death are less certain than the existence and importance of that letter. The account of exile and martyrdom in Crimea is a tradition, not an established contemporary report. His November 23 commemoration therefore offers a good occasion to begin with the surviving appeal for peace and then distinguish later stories from the early evidence.
This saint is included on this recurring date in the U.S. Roman Rite calendar published by the USCCB. This reading guide gives U.S. calendar saints priority; the Mass celebrated on a particular year’s date can differ because of Sundays, seasons or higher-ranking celebrations.
