St. Eata of Hexham
Eata was trained in the Christian community associated with Aidan at Lindisfarne. He became abbot of Melrose and took responsibility for other monastic foundations, including Ripon. His ministry eventually included episcopal service in northern England and the leadership of the Church of Hexham.
After the Synod of Whitby he accepted the Roman practice adopted by the local Church. The Catholic account remembers his peaceful character and the simplicity he retained while holding positions of authority. He continued an ascetic way of life rather than treating episcopal office as a departure from monastic commitment. His death is placed around 686, and his commemoration is October 26.
October 26 is a Catholic commemoration recorded by Nominis. This daily reading does not determine the Mass or liturgical rank; local calendars and higher-ranking celebrations can differ.
