St. Giles of Saint-Gilles
Giles, also known as Aegidius, is associated with a hermitage and monastery in the region of Nîmes in southern France. The community and town of Saint-Gilles preserve his name. His tomb became an important destination for medieval pilgrims traveling along routes connected with Santiago de Compostela.
Much of the familiar narrative of his life comes from legend. The widely depicted deer belongs to that devotional tradition and does not establish a detailed historical biography. Catholic sources themselves acknowledge the uncertainty about his origins and dates. His September 1 commemoration recognizes the saint's enduring cult while allowing readers to distinguish evidence about a place of pilgrimage from stories composed long after his lifetime.
September 1 is a Catholic commemoration recorded by Nominis. This daily reading does not determine the Mass or liturgical rank; local calendars and higher-ranking celebrations can differ.
