Saint John Eudes was a French priest who made the formation of clergy a central part of his ministry. He also helped develop devotion to the hearts of Jesus and Mary within seventeenth-century Catholic renewal.
Formed in the spirituality associated with Pierre de Bérulle's Oratory, Eudes saw the consequences of poorly prepared ministry. The Council of Trent had called for seminaries, but implementation was uneven. He responded by creating a congregation devoted especially to the preparation of priests.
Beginning at Caen, he established seminaries intended to form both intellect and character. His concern was not simply that candidates master information: prayer, moral responsibility, and the capacity to serve people belonged together. He extended this work to other dioceses as the congregation developed.
Devotion to the hearts of Jesus and Mary provided a spiritual center for that practical reform. Eudes connected God's love with the responsibilities of Christian and priestly life. Canonized in 1925, he is remembered for seeking lasting improvement in pastoral care through sustained formation, rather than assuming that ordination alone equipped a person for every demand of ministry.
This saint is included on this recurring date in the U.S. Roman Rite calendar published by the USCCB. This reading guide gives U.S. calendar saints priority; the Mass celebrated on a particular year’s date can differ because of Sundays, seasons or higher-ranking celebrations.
Explore the biography & sourcesWhen several saints share a date, this guide first favors saints on the USCCB’s U.S. calendar, then other documented Catholic commemorations. Dates can vary by place and tradition. This is a discovery guide, not the official liturgical calendar for your parish; the liturgical banner follows the celebration for the year. The date browser includes February 29 for leap years.
