St. Hyacinth of Poland

Hyacinth, known in Polish as Jacek, was an early Dominican missionary associated especially with Poland. He helped carry the newly founded Order of Preachers from its southern European beginnings into northern communities.

A priest from Silesia, he traveled to Rome with the bishop of Kraków and encountered Dominic. He received the Dominican habit and joined the preaching mission sent north. His formation linked theological instruction with the order's new pattern of common life.

Kraków became a principal center of his activity, and communities of friars spread through Polish and neighboring territories. Later biographies assigned him an exceptionally extensive itinerary across northern and eastern Europe, but not every distant journey can be confirmed.

Miracle stories likewise form part of his later cult rather than a secure record of daily events. His central historical importance remains the establishment and growth of Dominican preaching in the region. He died in Kraków on August 15, 1257, and was canonized in 1594. The Dominican commemoration on August 17 is distinct from his death anniversary. That distinction helps avoid confusing liturgical scheduling with the chronology of his life.

Dominican memorial; older sources may record August 16.

When several saints share a date, this guide first favors saints on the USCCB’s U.S. calendar, then other documented Catholic commemorations. Dates can vary by place and tradition. This is a discovery guide, not the official liturgical calendar for your parish; the liturgical banner follows the celebration for the year. The date browser includes February 29 for leap years.
