St. María de Jesús Sacramentado Venegas de la Torre
Born María Natividad Venegas de la Torre in Jalisco, she developed a life of prayer and service before joining a community caring for patients in Guadalajara. Religious life gave her the name María de Jesús Sacramentado, reflecting her devotion to the Eucharist. Nursing and attention to people in need became central to her vocation.
Her participation in a Marian association preceded the hospital community. A retreat in 1905 helped clarify the decision to join the women nursing at the Sacred Heart hospital. The small beginning matters: the institute developed out of an existing work of care rather than opening first as a large, fully organized congregation.
Chosen to lead the community, she prepared constitutions for the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, whose institute received approval in 1930. Accounts of her life emphasize patient leadership, kindness toward the sick, and practical religious service. She died in 1959 after decades in the community and was canonized by John Paul II in 2000.
Leadership brought the task of giving common service a stable rule. She served as vicar before being elected superior general in 1921 and preparing the community's constitutions. The approval of 1930 recognized that institutional development, while her continued attention to patients kept governance connected with the purpose for which the sisters had gathered.
Local commemoration on her death anniversary.
