St. Arsenius the Great

Arsenius is remembered among the Desert Fathers for a life devoted to silence, prayer, and repentance. His traditional biography describes a Roman who served as a tutor at the imperial court before withdrawing to the Egyptian desert.

The traditional court setting is Constantinople, where he is described as teaching members of the imperial family. His departure for Scetis reverses that position of honor. In the desert he accepted instruction from experienced monks rather than assuming that worldly education made him their spiritual superior.

Stories of his manual work and habits serve the teaching purposes of the desert tradition. They emphasize the discipline required to change a way of life. Such anecdotes are valuable witnesses to monastic ideals, while their exact dialogue and dramatic circumstances should not be mistaken for stenographic records.

At Scetis, he learned the ascetic life and became known for his humility and avoidance of public attention. The sayings and stories associated with him present the contrast between courtly prominence and monastic simplicity. His chronology varies between accounts, so exact dates should be treated cautiously. Western calendars commemorate him on July 19; Eastern churches also remember him on May 8.

May 8 is the Eastern commemoration of Arsenius, also listed by Vatican News. The Roman Martyrology uses July 19.

When several saints share a date, this guide first favors saints on the USCCB’s U.S. calendar, then other documented Catholic commemorations. Dates can vary by place and tradition. This is a discovery guide, not the official liturgical calendar for your parish; the liturgical banner follows the celebration for the year. The date browser includes February 29 for leap years.
