Hilary of Arles was a fifth-century bishop formed in the monastic community of Lérins. His career connects the religious renewal of southern Gaul with disputes over the developing authority of bishops and Rome.
From a wealthy background, he entered religious life under Honoratus and devoted himself to discipline and Scripture. When Honoratus, by then bishop of Arles, died, Hilary succeeded him and brought that monastic formation into episcopal service.
He participated in regional councils and exercised metropolitan responsibilities. A conflict arose after a council he led deposed Bishop Cheldonius. Cheldonius appealed to Pope Leo I, who reversed the decision, and Hilary's efforts to defend his conduct intensified the dispute.
The surviving accounts do not permit every allegation or consequence to be reconstructed confidently. Leo nevertheless later referred to Hilary's holy memory. This complexity matters: two figures honored as saints could have a serious institutional disagreement. Hilary's legacy includes learning and pastoral leadership as well as the controversy. It should not be reduced either to flawless administration or to a simple story in which one side had no legitimate concerns.

Explore the biography & sourcesWhen several saints share a date, this guide first favors saints on the USCCB’s U.S. calendar, then other documented Catholic commemorations. Dates can vary by place and tradition. This is a discovery guide, not the official liturgical calendar for your parish; the liturgical banner follows the celebration for the year. The date browser includes February 29 for leap years.
