St. John Joseph of the Cross
John Joseph of the Cross was a Franciscan from Ischia who worked in the Naples region. He entered the Friars Minor while young and devoted much of his ministry to renewing community life according to the reform associated with Peter of Alcántara. His responsibilities included leadership within the order and spiritual direction.
The Catholic account emphasizes poverty, compassion and practical ability alongside prayer. He helped restore religious discipline in several friaries rather than limiting his work to personal devotion. Later accounts also contain extraordinary mystical episodes, which are not needed to establish this outline of his life. He died in Naples in 1734 and is commemorated on March 5.
March 5 is a Catholic commemoration recorded by Nominis. This daily reading does not determine the Mass or liturgical rank; local calendars and higher-ranking celebrations can differ.
