St. Paula Montal Fornés
Paula Montal Fornés lost her father as a child and helped support her family. Growing up in Arenys de Mar, she recognized how limited educational opportunities were for girls. In 1829 she and Inés Busquets opened a school in Figueres, offering a broader education within a Christian setting.
Further schools followed, and cooperation with the Piarists helped shape the Sisters of the Pious Schools. Paula drew on the educational spirituality of Saint Joseph Calasanz and made teaching central to the congregation's religious commitment. Her contribution was not simply founding a school, but building a durable community around girls' education. She was canonized in 2001.
