St. Ethelbert of Kent
Ethelbert was king of Kent and one of the early English rulers to become Christian. His wife Bertha was a Frankish Christian. He received Augustine and the missionaries sent by Pope Gregory the Great, listened to their teaching and was baptized. His support gave the mission an important place from which to develop.
The Catholic account also associates his reign with the establishment of churches, including the first Saint Paul's cathedral in London. The Martyrology commemorates his burial at Canterbury in 616, and his calendar date is February 24. He should not be confused with other rulers named Ethelbert. His significance lies in the relationship between royal patronage, conversion and the beginnings of organized Christian mission in Kent.
February 24 is a Catholic commemoration recorded by Nominis. This daily reading does not determine the Mass or liturgical rank; local calendars and higher-ranking celebrations can differ.
