St. Catherine de Ricci
Catherine was born Alessandra de Ricci in Florence and entered the Dominican community at San Vincenzo in Prato as a teenager. She became a prioress and remained involved in the guidance of her community and in correspondence with people seeking spiritual advice.
She chose San Vincenzo because of its reputation for serious religious observance. Her entry in 1535 was followed by profession the next year. The community’s history and the offices she held provide a firmer chronology than some of the extraordinary experiences reported about her.
Her correspondence and concern for relatives show that enclosure did not mean indifference to people beyond the convent. As prioress or subprioress she carried practical responsibilities over many years. Accounts of mystical experiences should be read alongside that sustained work rather than allowing them to become her entire biography.
Her reputation was closely associated with reported mystical experiences of Christ’s Passion. These belong to the devotional accounts of her religious life, alongside the documented history of her community leadership. She was canonized in 1746. The cited Dominican calendar observes her on February 4; the Roman Martyrology records her on February 2, the anniversary of her death.
February 2 is Catherine de Ricci’s Roman Martyrology commemoration; the Dominican proper uses February 4.
